Discussion: What makes me love a book

We all have those times where we just can't get into the books were reading. I'm kind of going through that right now. Usually, I try to persevere and finish the book just so I can mark it as 'Read' on Goodreads (let's face it, that's the only reason I will continue to read it). But I want to talk today about the books that make me want to continue reading. You know, those things that make a book enjoyable. So today, I'm going to go through what a book generally has to have in order for me to like it. It doesn't necessarily have to have it all of them, but have a few and I'm hooked.

- An engaging story - This is a big one. If the story is boring, I'm onto the next book

- Good writing - A few times the plot of the book seemed really interesting. However, the way it was delivered I didn't like. And it's sad, you know. I could have enjoyed that story but didn't

- Relatable Characters - This one pretty much speaks for itself. If the character seems like someone who will not exist in real life (because of their personality) or if one of the main characters are a complete asshole it can ruin a story for me (not always, but mostly)

- Humor - I love it when books have really funny dialogue or the character themselves are funny (eg. Daemon from Lux Series, Jace from The Mortal Instruments). It makes the book so much more enjoyable. I often love it in action type novels especially. It gives you a break from reading about all the action

- When books grab you from the first line - This I LOVE. For example, the first line in Divergent is 'There is only one mirror in my home'. This grabbed me. Who has only one mirror in their home? And if so, why does it seem as though it is intentional? I want to keep reading to find out why

- A romantic relationship that is super cute - My close friends know that I love fictional relationships whether it's in a book (eg. Anna/St Clair - Anna and the French Kiss) TV show (eg. Hanna/Caleb - PLL) or movie (eg. Becca/Jesse - Pitch Perfect). Those are just a few of my fictional relationship obsessions (actually, mainly I love the romantic interests). I'm always the one fangirling over them. And I love it.

That's all I can think of at the moment. What makes you love a book?

Discussion: Those times when all you do is read 24/7

Hey Everyone,

Guess what. I love to read (well, duh. As if you didn't know that). But lately, all I have been doing is reading. You see, I have just started the Lux Series by Jennifer L. Armentrout and I can't stop reading it. All I think about is Daemon and Katy and what they are going to have to face when I continue reading. You wanna know what I did at school today when I should have been paying attention in class? I was thinking about my book and how awesome it was. I just wanted to fangirl with my friend who has read the book (and who recommended me read it) in the middle of class. I do go through this fangirling stage a fair bit with other books, but with this series, it has taken a whole new level.

I am not sure if this has anything got to do with it, but I have just come out of a exam period (and honestly, it is like the second most important exam period of my school life) and I think I wanted to reward myself for getting through the exams (yuk, exams). But you see, during my exam period I was reading Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins and that is the last time I read a 4.16 Star Goodreads average rating in an exam period. Worst decision of my life. You know what I was thinking when I should have been studying Biology? I was thinking St Clair! St Clair! Why you no tell Anna your feelings for her? (insert excessive hand movements here). There were times where I had to bribe myself. I was like, Ok Monica. Just study for half an hour and you can read a chapter of Anna and the French Kiss. I did this over and over again. And then when exams finished, I spent two hours reading straight, finally finishing the book. Nothing was going to stop me seeing Anna and St Clair together. Nothing!

I have a feeling my excessive reading habits will decrease after the Lux Series. Don't worry, I will still be reading as I usually do. Just not every single moment I am at the moment.
Anyway. I'm going to leave it here today so I can go continue to read the Lux Series. But hey, there is nothing better than a good book right?

E-Readers

Hi Everyone,
Guess what. I have bought my first e-reader (YAY). I've been thinking of buying one for ages and then would always squash the idea. However, the other day I was thinking about it again (as I do) and I finally decided that I will buy one. It took me a while to choose which e-reader to buy. You see, I was always planning to buy a kindle. But after reading online that you can only read books on your kindle that you buy from the kindle store, I decided to buy a Kobo instead. That way, I can read books from my library and also buy books from a wide variety of online ebook stores and not just be forced to buy it from the one store. And let me tell you, I am in love with it.

I'm actually quite shocked at how much I enjoy reading from it. I have always been a book type of person. I never really thought that I would enjoy reading from a e-reader. Don't get me wrong, I will always be a paper book sort of person, but I'm willing to give the Kobo a go.

I'm still pretty new to how it works and the features it has. So, I guess if I were to talk to you about it in a months time or so, I should be an expert on it. But right now, I'm enjoying finding out the features and stuff. If you have any tips or know of any awesome features on the Kobo, let me know below. It'll be a great help
